O Μάρκο Πόλο Δεν Επισκέφτηκε Ποτέ την Κίνα / Marco Polo may have never visited China…

… and most of his travels were based on stories he heard from other travellers, manuscripts he read and a vivid imagination.

total trip

Xia’he, Silk Road, Gansu Province

But the Silk Road was very real – an ancient superhighway between Xian, the imperial capital of China and Central Asia all the way to Persia and Eastern Mediterranean. The most important land route that ever existed, carrying across it commerce,  people, ideas and religions, including – Buddhism, nestorian Christianity and Islam..  A highway that, from 600BC until the 16th century, when the Portuguese discovered sea route, was the only link between  China and the  world to the West, A truly multicultural road that camel caravans would traverse, passing  through modern day central Asian republics  and the western fringes of China, through the Himalayas, the Taklamakan or Gobi desert, on whose fringes lived nomadic Mongols, Han Chinese, Uygurs, Tibetans. Tatars, Hui, Altan tribes  and Persians – all at the borders  of the mighty Chinese empire. Camels, deserts, snow-capped peaks, ancient towns, some of the greatest artistic masterpieces of human kind and more than 20 different people are part of this road. Still an area of unrest – in 2009 demonstrations by  ethnic Uygurs and of course,  Tibet .

We will be following this route by train and bus, starting from Xian, all the way to Kashgar, and maybe up to Kyrgystan.

The Silk Road – crossing overland China by train  / Ο δρόμος του μεταξιού – διασχίζοντας με τραίνο την Κίνα

If the Han Chinese were the Asian version of Romans (albeit Romans ruling for millennia rather than centuries), building an empire by creating a strong centralized state and army as well as  an enlightened government unifying the population through a common currency, measurements, huge public works then these people were always the “barbarians at the gate” –buffer people between the heart of the empire and the enemies outside.

Random observations…

Observation 1: Everyone in China smokes. Obsessively, continuously, on the street, behind the work desk, in cafes, restaurants, in buses and trains, ignoring the «no smoking» signs, when these exist  Their famous discipline and obedience to the law seems to end when their addiction starts – and indeed. It appears that the state has taken this into account and treats them with tolerance. At first it seems unexplainable – then I remember the opium wars  – the war that England waged on China to ensure the free flow of opium it provided to Chinese. At the time up to 10% of Chinese were addicted to opium. Maybe there is,  after all, a bright future for tobacco companies – go east?!

Observation 2: Almost one in five people in China wears mouth masks. For the dust? For bacteria? It is almost like a fashion accessory – they come in different colors and fabrics, with patterns or plain – like an upside – down headscarf…Is it an deep rooted belief to avoid contamination and bugs – would seem rather sensible, in a land of 1.2 billion – the ideal breeding ground for epidemics…Or is it just the dust?

Observation 3: Parents meet every Sunday in Shanghai park to put up advertising papers with photos for their bachelor sons and daughters – complete with age, height, education, salary and photos.  Other parents  hang around looking at the description, copying telephone numbers and discussing, girls giggling…

“Love Tunnel”, People Square.Shanghai

Observation 4: The basic salary in China  is not so low anymore – at around 2000-3000 yen – with the euro at 7.7 yen this corresponds to  389 euros – only marginally lower than the current minimum salary in Greece (450 euros). You can hire a day laborer for about 200 yen – about 26 euros.

Observation 6.

Observation 7.
