Αθήνα – Μόσχα – Πεκίνο – Αεροδρόμιο (Ξανά) – Airport Beijing: People dressed formally but somehow gruff and old fashioned. Things run on time, people seem polite and quietly efficient. “Welcome to China” The empire that lasted for thousands of years, a language spoken uninterrupted for almostfour millenia 4000 years, a population larger than Europe and the US combined, the greatest civilization on earth, at least from 200 to 1600 AC, one that discovered the compass, the printing machine, paper currency, gunpowder (but not dynamite, as rightly corrected!). A country with an authoritarian government, a country that managed to drag 1 billion people out of poverty during the last decade: provide them with clothes, food, electricity, health care and create a huge middle class that goes on holidays (the biggest creators of international tourist income for 2012 ) and one of the most vibrant modern art scenes…
(While at the same time in Greece – and in a big part of Europe- poverty is rising, new diseases are appearing, and the middle class is disappearing.…) A country of contradictions and inequalities … As I travel I am reading the gripping account of one big family in the whole 20th century – Big Breasts, Wide Hips by Mo Yan – Nobel prize in literature 2012 – for someone “who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary” – the Chinese Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Περπατώντας στα ανάκτορα της απαγορευμένης πόλης – «αυτή είναι η ειδική πύλη από όπου έβγαιναν οι επιτυχόντες στις εξετάσεις για την δημοσία διοίκηση, και αυτός ο χώρος όπου τους υποδεχόταν ο αυτοκράτορας». Από το 200 πχ εώς το 1911 μ Χ, οι θέσεις σε όλα τα ανώτατα αξιώματα ήταν προσβάσιμες μετά από κεντρικές εξετάσεις- (αν , και όπως σε όλες σχεδόν τις εξετάσεις τα μέλη των πιο μορφωμένων οικογενειών είχαν de facto unfair advantage). Η λογική τους – όχι μόνο η πιο αξιοκρατική στελέχωση της διοίκησης, αλλά και η μεγαλύτερη εμπιστοσύνη ανάμεσα στους πολίτες / υπηκοους με το κράτος…(Κάτι σαν τον ΑΣΕΠ – αλλά 2000 και χρόνια πριν)

Πεκίνο – Σαγκάη με τον νέο γρήγορο τρένο – το ταχύμετρο κολλημένο στα 308 χλμ/ώρα. Σε τέσσερις ώρες και σαράντα λεπτά είμαστε στην Σαγκάη..
Oι παλιές αποικιακές συνοικίες (French Concession) , οι έπαυλεις που τώρα μοιράζονται 4-5 οικογένειες…
